Jain Wedding Traditions

Marriage is popular because it combines the maximum of temptation with the maximum of opportunity. The world believes in this idea and so they take ample care to see that the ceremony is conducted with all its due reverence and glory. Indian Wedding Traditions are known for following a strict discipline and rituals. Indiscriminate of every religion and caste Indian culture is prone to make elaborate arrangements on wedding. Since the Jains follow their holy book of Jain Vivaha Vidhi for referring to their marriage rituals, they abide by the rituals carried out by the Jain community. According to Jain Wedding Traditions, marriage means a public declaration of a man and a woman’s intention to be together for the entire life. The community gives support to the couple by being a part of it.
Jain Wedding Traditions do not support any wastage of money or time. But expect to celebrate the marriage ceremony in a delicate manner. The Jain Wedding will start of when Vagdana takes place with the parents of the bride and groom declaring the intention to marry and finalizing of the marriage negotiation. Apart from pooja nothing mentionable happens. After the Engagement or sagai takes place at the groom’s house sacred prayers are chanted to ensure perennial bondage and prolific nuptial life. Kulkar Sthapan is also a similar ritual that is held for the groom's home. The preparation of the wedding day starts off with the construction of the wedding structure which is also called Mandapa-Vedi Pratishtha.

Since the Jains are known for their orthodox nature in certain aspects of life, marriage also comes in that list. As Wedding in India is quite a grand affair, people can look forward to enjoy it for more than a single day the same is the case with the Jain wedding. The marriage ceremony begins with Ghudhchadi, when the groom's procession leaves for the bride's place. As the groom reaches the destination, the bride welcomes the groom with a traditional garland. Later the bride and groom are expected to look at each other's faces and go for the garlanding ceremony inside the mandap. Wedding Traditions of Jains also consist of Kanyavaran and Hasta Melap, which is also known as joining ceremony. The Jain Wedding Traditions believes in offering worship to Goddess Lakshmi. The priests offer a prayer in honor of the gods of directions and fields.
As the wedding ceremony continues with the rituals like, Gotrachar, Granthi Bandhan, Agni Pradakshina and Kanyadaan, the guests assemble and enjoy the gala mood of the occasion. The marriage ceremony comes to an end after the couple takes the priest's blessings. The feast is arranged for the guests where they dine and bless happiness to the couple. Jain Wedding Traditions believe in sending the bride to the groom’s house immediately after the marriage. The bride comes to her own new house and continues to settle down on a happy nuptial life. There is not much of pomp and lavish arrangement in Jain wedding, yet it does not miss out o the celebration and mirth attributed to a wedding
