Kashmiri wedding traditions

Kashmir or Jammu & Kashmir is the state located in the Northernmost point of India, the largest country in South Asia. Jammu& Kashmir is the home to large number of people and the Muslims dominate the percentage of population in the state. Just like people of all other parts of the country, the people of Kashmir too follow various cultural and social traditions among which the Kashmiri wedding traditions are the most unique. There are several unique features that make Kashmiri wedding traditions quite distinctive from the traditions followed by people belonging to other communities.
Just like all other communities in India, the marriage ceremony is the most important social duty performed by the families and the wedding parties are greatest social gatherings. Plenty of people are invited in the dinner parties by the family of both bride and the groom and the wedding take place by strictly following each ritual or step starting from the pre-wedding period to post wedding ceremonies. Some detail regarding the Kashmiri wedding traditions are given below:

Kashmiri wedding starts with matching the horoscope of the bride and the groom. Kashmiri people stress on on checking the compatibility between the family of the bride and the groom, check the backgrounds of each other's family, reputation and status. Priest comes and fixes the date and timings of the wedding after matching the horoscopes and then the two parties agree to match. After that several rituals or step are followed in the pre-wedding period. The names of the rituals are given below:
  • Vaana
  • Livun
  • Wannun
  • Manzirat
  • Duribat
  • Devgon
Vaana: Vanna is formal engagement or commitment ceremony that takes place after the two parties agreeto form the alliance. Vaana takes place in front of an idol,which is followed by the meeting of parents and other elderly persons from the family of bride and the groom. The two parties meet in a temple and and exchange flowers that symbolizes the formalization of the ceremony. The bride's family invite the groom party for a meal that comprises traditional Kashmiri food. Apart from that, preparing rice pudding (var) by the eldest aunt in both families is also an important part of Kashmiri wedding traditions. The pudding is distributed among relatives and neighbors. Cash, dry fruits and a pot containing nabad (misri) is send by the bride's family to the groom's house.

Livun: Cleansing of the houses of both the bride and the groom before wedding is known as Livun. Generally Livun do not take place on the same day in both houses. The participation of all female members in the Livun is customary.
Wanwun: Wanwun is the next part of the pre-marriage rituals ans is held a few days before wedding. Wanwun are actually music sessions that are held every evening at both and are attended by the relatives and neighbors of both sides. Wanwun adds a lot tio festive mood in both houses.

Maanziraat: The ceremony that takes place a week before the wedding is known as Maanziraat. The ceremony begins with krool khanun, a ceremony for decorating the main entrance of both the houses. In Krool khanun is followed by an elaborate bathing of the bride. After bath, the oldest aunt of the bride decorated her hand with henna or maanz. Women are invited in the ceremony and are served Kashmiri meal prepared by the waza.

Apart from these the other important parts of Kashmiri wedding traditions in the pre-marriage session are Bariyan, sending of thaals, sending of phool ka gehna (ornamnets made of flowers), mehendi (decoration of Bride's hand, palm and feet with mehndi), Diugun, Sanzvaru and Devgon.

  • Vidai: (the farewell of bride from her home)
  • Welcoming the newly-weds at groom's house
